Buena Vista Social Club
Buena Vista Social Club, the legendary album produced by American guitarist Ry Cooder, is the biggest selling world music album ever, with over 8 million records sold. Cooder travelled to Havana in 1996 to seek out a number of legendary local musicians whose performing careers largely ended decades earlier with the rise of Fidel Castro. He assembled some of Cuba’s most renowned musicians, recruiting the long-forgotten likes of singer Ibrahim Ferrer, guitarists/singers Compay Segundo and Eliades Ochoa, and pianist Ruben Gonzalez.
Film maker Wim Wenders created an Academy Award-nominated hit documentary about the same band, capturing recording and live footage and bringing the story of these phenomenal musicians to the screen. Buena Vista Social Club is an essential record – from any genre – for any collection.
